Summary

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) accurately predict neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants with birth asphyxia. Serial VEP testing provides reliable prognostic information for managing neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

Background:

  • Birth asphyxia is a leading cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity.
  • Predicting neurologic outcomes in survivors, especially with moderate hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, remains challenging.
  • Visual evoked potential (VEP) measures cortical function and reflects central nervous system changes due to asphyxia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between serial VEPs and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 18 months in term infants with birth asphyxia.
  • To assess the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of VEPs in predicting outcomes.
  • To evaluate VEP utility in clinical management.

  • Serial VEPs were performed on 36 term infants with documented birth asphyxia.

    • In moderately asphyxiated infants, VEPs showed 100% accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity.

    Conclusions:

    • VEPs correlate well with neurodevelopmental outcomes in term infants experiencing birth asphyxia.
    • Serial VEP testing provides accurate prognostic information crucial for clinical management.
    • VEPs are a valuable tool for predicting outcomes in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
