Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Anesthesiology
  • Cardiology

Background:

  • The oculocardiac reflex is a common complication during ophthalmic surgery.
  • This reflex can lead to potentially serious cardiac events.
  • Minimizing this reflex is crucial for patient safety during ocular procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of retrobulbar block in preventing the oculocardiac reflex.
  • To assess the reflex's occurrence under different anesthesia types (general vs. local).

Main Methods:

  • 100 patients undergoing ocular operations were included.
  • Extraocular muscles were tugged during surgery (154 muscles total).
  • The occurrence of the oculocardiac reflex was monitored.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Retrobulbar block demonstrated effectiveness in reducing the oculocardiac reflex.
  • The protective effect was observed irrespective of whether general or local anesthesia was administered.
  • The study provides quantitative data on reflex occurrence and mitigation.

Conclusions:

  • Retrobulbar block is a valuable technique for managing the oculocardiac reflex in ophthalmic surgery.
  • Anesthesia type does not negate the benefits of retrobulbar block for reflex prevention.
  • This finding supports the routine use of retrobulbar block to enhance patient safety during eye operations.
