Concurrent training in elderly men showed interference effects, potentially impairing neural adaptations. Strength training alone yielded superior gains in muscle strength and activation compared to combined or endurance training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of concurrent strength and endurance training on neuromuscular and hormonal parameters in elderly men.
  • To compare the outcomes of concurrent training with isolated strength or endurance training.

Main Methods:

  • 23 healthy elderly men (65±4 years) were divided into concurrent (CG), strength (SG), or endurance (EG) groups.
  • Training programs were conducted 3 times per week for 12 weeks.
  • Evaluated parameters included muscle strength, muscle activation, and serum hormones.

Main Results:

  • All groups showed increased lower-body strength, with SG > CG > EG.
  • Only SG and CG improved upper-body strength.
  • SG demonstrated significant increases in isometric strength and maximal muscle activation, alongside decreases in submaximal activation.
  • EG experienced a decrease in free testosterone.

Conclusions:

  • Concurrent training may lead to an "interference effect" that impairs neural adaptations.
  • Isolated strength training appears more effective for enhancing muscle strength and activation in elderly men compared to concurrent or endurance training alone.
