Summary

This case report details a rare instance of sporotrichosis, a deep fungal infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii. The patient achieved a clinical cure after a six-month treatment with Itraconazole.

Background:

  • Sporotrichosis is a rare deep fungal infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii.
  • The infection is typically acquired through traumatic implantation of the fungus into the skin.

Observation:

  • A 40-year-old woman presented with a linear pattern of erythematous, ulcerated, and crusted nodules along her right arm.
  • Lesions extended from the little finger to the upper arm, following the lymphatic course.

Findings:

  • Microscopic examination of skin lesion discharge revealed the yeast form of Sporothrix schenckii.
  • Culture of the discharge confirmed the presence of Sporothrix schenckii in its mycelial form.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering sporotrichosis in the differential diagnosis of ulcerative skin lesions with a lymphatic spread.
  • Successful treatment with Itraconazole demonstrates its efficacy in managing this rare fungal infection.
  • Reporting rare cases aids in understanding the clinical presentation and treatment outcomes of sporotrichosis.
