Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Rheumatology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Overlap syndrome is characterized by features of multiple autoimmune rheumatic diseases.
  • Neurological involvement in overlap syndrome is not well-characterized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of neurological findings in patients with overlap syndrome.
  • To describe unusual neurological presentations in overlap syndrome.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 33 patients diagnosed with overlap syndrome.
  • Detailed review of neurological examinations and clinical histories.

Main Results:

  • 15% (5 out of 33) of patients exhibited neurological findings.
  • Unilateral trigeminal sensory neuropathy was the most common finding, present in 4 patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Two patients presented with central nervous system involvement suggestive of demyelinating disease, including aseptic meningitis and progressive paraparesis.
  • Conclusions:

    • Neurological manifestations, especially trigeminal neuropathy, are frequent in overlap syndrome.
    • Overlap syndrome can present with central nervous system involvement mimicking demyelinating disorders.
