Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Summary

Research on work functioning in common mental disorders (CMDs) shows existing tools measure productivity and role limitations. More research is needed on work-related factors and better measurement instruments for quality and effort.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Common mental disorders (CMDs) significantly impact employee work functioning.
  • Understanding work functioning is crucial for effective workplace interventions and support.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current research on work functioning in individuals with CMDs.
  • To evaluate existing instruments used for measuring work functioning.
  • To identify gaps in research and measurement tools for work functioning in CMDs.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted two systematic literature reviews.
  • The first review identified studies measuring work functioning in workers with CMDs.
  • The second review identified instruments for assessing work functioning.

Main Results:

  • Work functioning research predominantly focuses on clinical factors.
  • Validated instruments are available for measuring productivity and work role limitations.
  • Existing instruments may not fully capture the nuances of work functioning in CMDs.

Conclusions:

  • Further investigation into work-related determinants of work functioning is essential.
  • Development of work-focused interventions requires understanding these determinants.
  • Existing instruments need validation in CMD populations, and new tools are needed to assess work quality and effort.
