Summary

Cutaneous leishmaniasis, a sand fly-borne protozoan disease, presents as skin papules. Increased travel necessitates awareness of sporadic cases in non-endemic regions.

Area of Science:

Background:

  • Cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most prevalent form of leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania parasites transmitted via sand flies.
  • Old World leishmaniasis is commonly found in Mediterranean regions and surrounding countries.

Observation:

  • A case study of a 10-year-old boy presenting with cutaneous leishmaniasis.
  • Lesions appeared as papules on the nose and bilateral lower legs.

Findings:

  • Histopathology revealed diffuse dermal infiltration by macrophages containing Leishmania amastigotes.
  • Lymphocytes, eosinophils, and plasma cells were also present in the dermal infiltrate.

Implications:

  • Sporadic cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis are increasingly observed in non-endemic areas due to heightened international travel and work.
