  • Seventy-seven adults with diabetes completed validated questionnaires on self-care, motivation, health literacy, health status, social support, and self-efficacy.
  • Regression analyses were used to examine relationships between variables.

  • Autonomous motivation was significantly linked to maintaining diet (p<0.0001) and blood glucose testing (p<0.04).
  • No significant associations were found for exercise, although older age approached significance (p=0.06).

Conclusions:

  • Autonomous motivation is a key factor in promoting diet and blood glucose monitoring for diabetes self-care.
  • Despite challenges, particularly with exercise, Self-Determination Theory offers a useful framework for enhancing diabetes management.
