College students with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) struggle with estimating time on complex tasks. These retrospective time estimation difficulties may impact their academic performance.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychology
- Education
Background:
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting executive functions.
- Time estimation is a critical executive function for academic success.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate time estimation abilities in college students with ADHD.
- To compare ADHD students' performance on a complex, academically relevant task against non-ADHD peers.
Main Methods:
- 20 college students with ADHD and 20 without ADHD completed a novel task.
- Measures included time to completion, errors, prospective and retrospective time estimates, and confidence.
Main Results:
- ADHD participants showed significant differences in time estimation compared to controls, excluding confidence and errors.
- Retrospective time estimation was particularly impaired in the ADHD group.
Conclusions:
- College students with ADHD exhibit deficits in retrospective time estimation.
- These difficulties may negatively affect academic functioning and performance in higher education.
