Summary

Younger age at first basal cell carcinoma (BCC) diagnosis, red hair, higher socioeconomic status, and upper extremity lesions increase the risk of developing multiple BCC lesions. Closer follow-up is recommended for these patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence of single and multiple basal cell carcinoma (BCC) lesions.
  • To identify associated risk factors for developing multiple BCC lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, population-based cohort study of 10,994 Dutch individuals aged 55 and older (1990-2007).
  • Data on BCC lesions collected from national pathology laboratories, hospitals, and general practices.
  • Multivariate logistic regression and Andersen-Gill models used to analyze associations between determinants and BCC lesion occurrence.

  • Of 10,820 eligible participants, 524 (4.8%) developed BCC, with 361 single and 163 (31.1%) multiple lesions.

  • Findings aid in risk stratification and personalized patient management for BCC.
