Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively evaluate the progression and outcomes of late radiation-induced proctitis.
  • To identify factors influencing the prognosis of patients with radiation-induced proctitis.

  • Retrospective study of 65 patients with late radiation-induced proctitis.
  • Analysis of injury progression, treatment interventions, and patient outcomes, including mortality.

  • 82% of patients experienced progression of colorectal injuries (stricture, fistula, perforation).
  • 41 patients had injuries extend to the small bowel or urinary tract.
  • Overall mortality was 23%, with small bowel or urinary tract injuries significantly influencing outcomes.
  • After 11 years, 51% of survivors had a fair outcome, while 48% experienced ongoing symptoms.

  • Radiation-induced proctitis is a progressive condition with significant morbidity and mortality.
  • It should not be considered a benign manifestation of radiation injury.
  • Coexisting small bowel or urinary tract injuries are critical prognostic factors.
