Background:

Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) present complex behavioral challenges to multiple service agencies.
Disparities exist in how various service providers approach and manage patients with BPD.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the emotional responses, concerns, and beliefs of both health and non-health related agencies when working with individuals with BPD.
To identify the factors contributing to differing agency responses to BPD.

Main Methods:

A custom-designed questionnaire was administered to diverse agencies.
Data collection occurred before participants received specialized educational training on a community-based BPD care model.

Main Results:

Police respondents indicated a preference for medication and hospitalization for suicidal individuals with BPD.
A common human response and a general support for interagency collaboration were observed across agencies.

Conclusions:

Significant variations in agency responses to people with BPD were identified.
These differences are attributed to underlying ideological divergences among agency groups.
