Summary

Human observers can detect subtle changes in light direction, even when local scene statistics remain constant. This visual perception ability enhances the detection of surface albedo changes.

  • To determine if observers can use light field information to improve surface albedo change detection.
  • To differentiate perception of light transformations from surface albedo changes.

  • Two experiments were conducted using matte surfaces under collimated light.
  • Experiment 1: Observers discriminated light direction changes from surface albedo changes with matched local statistics.
  • Experiment 2: Observers detected isolated surface albedo changes during light or surface transformations.
