Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the correlation between pulp stones and cardiovascular disorders, Type II diabetes mellitus, autoimmune disorders, and dental wear defects.
  • To evaluate the frequency of pulp stones in the Dakshina Kannada district population.
  • To assess the association of pulp stones with sex, tooth type, dental arch, and side.

Main Methods:

  • Radiographic examination of 1432 teeth from five groups: cardiovascular disorders, Type II diabetes mellitus, autoimmune disorders, dental wear defects, and a control group.
  • Teeth were analyzed using radio visiography (RVG) and conventional intra-oral periapical radiography under 2X magnification.
  • Chi-square analysis was employed to compare pulp stone occurrence frequencies.

Main Results:

  • Pulp stones were detected in 9.35% (134/1432) of teeth.
  • A significantly higher prevalence of pulp stones was observed in patients with cardiovascular disorders (15.86%) compared to other groups.
  • Molars (18.29%) and teeth in the maxillary arch (12.36%) showed a higher occurrence of pulp stones than premolars and mandibular arch teeth, respectively. No significant differences were found based on sex or side.

Conclusions:

  • A positive correlation exists between systemic disorders and the presence of pulp stones.
  • Cardiovascular patients exhibited the highest prevalence of pulp stones, followed by those with dental wear defects, with the control group showing the least.
  • Pulp stone prevalence is influenced by tooth type and dental arch, but not significantly by sex or side.
