Summary

Transconjunctival pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) impacts ocular surface molecules. Smaller gauge PPV (23-gauge) results in a significantly lower increase in the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) compared to larger gauge PPV (20-gauge).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate changes in ocular surface molecules, specifically inflammatory cytokines, following transconjunctival pars plana vitrectomy (PPV).
  • To compare the molecular impact of 20-gauge versus 23-gauge PPV on the ocular surface.

Main Methods:

  • Tear samples were collected from 28 patients before and after 20-gauge or 23-gauge PPV.
  • Concentrations of key inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and IL-8, were measured.
