Context:

Eating disorders (ED) present significant challenges requiring prolonged treatment.
The workplace is a critical environment for individuals with ED, yet its specific challenges and awareness remain under-researched.
Understanding the prevalence and workplace factors associated with ED is crucial for early intervention and support.

Purpose:

To investigate the awareness and prevalence of eating disorders (ED), including anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and night eating syndrome (NES), within the workplace.
To explore the relationship between job stress and the presence of ED symptoms among workers.
To compare workplace ED awareness and prevalence with findings from a clinical ED patient group.

Summary:

A survey of 1248 enterprises and 2004 workers revealed varying recognition levels for ED, with AN and BN well-known but NES poorly recognized.
The prevalence of suspected AN, BN, and NES among workers was found to be 0.27%, 0.21%, and 12.9%, respectively.
Analysis indicated specific job stressors are associated with ED, suggesting a link between occupational stress and disordered eating behaviors.

Impact:

Findings underscore the importance of improving workplace recognition of all forms of ED, especially less-understood conditions like NES.
Highlights the necessity for developing effective coping strategies for job stress to mitigate ED risks in the workforce.
Emphasizes the need for early identification of abnormal eating behaviors in occupational settings to facilitate timely support and intervention.
