Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Hematology
  • Clinical Microbiology

Background:

  • Prolonged hospitalization and prior antibiotic use are risk factors for multidrug-resistant infections.
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients are immunocompromised, increasing susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens.

Observation:

  • A patient with non-Hodgkin lymphoma developed Corynebacterium jeikeium septicemia after over a month of hospitalization and antibiotic treatment.
  • The isolated Corynebacterium jeikeium strain exhibited multi-resistance, with susceptibility limited to vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and rifampin.

Findings:

  • Intravenous vancomycin therapy resulted in clinical improvement and bacteriologic cure of the Corynebacterium jeikeium septicemia.
  • Vancomycin demonstrated efficacy against this multidrug-resistant organism in a clinical setting.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of monitoring for and managing multidrug-resistant infections in immunocompromised patients.
  • Suggests vancomycin as a viable treatment option for Corynebacterium jeikeium septicemia, even in cases of multi-resistance.
