Manual reduction of displaced disk.

A R Van Dyke, S M Goldman

Cranio : the Journal of Craniomandibular Practice
    |October 1, 1990
    PubMed
    Summary

Early manual disk reduction effectively restored jaw function in 93% of patients with anterior medial disc displacement. This non-surgical approach, performed within 6-8 weeks of onset, avoided the need for surgical correction.

    Area of Science:

    • Dentistry
    • Orthodontics
    • Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

    Background:

    • Anterior medial disc displacement is a common temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.
    • Early intervention is crucial for managing TMJ disc displacement and restoring function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of early manual disk reduction procedures in treating anterior medial disc displacement of the TMJ.
    • To determine the necessity of surgical correction following non-surgical TMJ disc reduction.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 41 patients diagnosed with anterior medial disc displacement without recapture were treated.
    • Manual disk reduction procedures were employed as the primary intervention.
    • Treatment was initiated within a six- to eight-week timeframe from symptom onset.

    Main Results:

    • Manual disk reduction procedures successfully established a functional disk-condyle relationship in the majority of patients.
    • Ninety-three percent of the treated patients did not require subsequent surgical intervention.
    • The early application of manual disk reduction proved effective in preventing the need for surgery.

    Conclusions:

    • Early manual disk reduction is a highly effective non-surgical treatment for anterior medial disc displacement.
    • This conservative approach significantly reduces the need for surgical correction in TMJ disc displacement cases.
    • Timely intervention with manual disk reduction offers a favorable prognosis for TMJ disorder management.
