Summary

Syringomyelic arthropathy, a complication of syringomyelia, occurred in 6 of 13 patients. This study suggests a combined neurotrophic, neurotraumatic, and neurovascular mechanism is responsible for this condition.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Rheumatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Syringomyelia is a neurological disorder characterized by cyst formation within the spinal cord.
  • Syringomyelic arthropathy is a less common but significant complication affecting joints.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present cases of syringomyelic arthropathy.
  • To analyze the etiopathogenesis, clinical, radiological, and pathological features.
  • To propose a unifying pathogenetic mechanism.

Main Methods:

  • Case series presentation.
  • Review of clinical, radiological, and pathological data.
  • Literature review for comparative analysis.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Eight cases of syringomyelic arthropathy were identified in 6 patients with syringomyelia.
  • The observed incidence of arthropathy was higher than previously reported.
  • An eclectic pathogenetic model integrating neurotrophic, neurotraumatic, and neurovascular factors was proposed.
  • Conclusions:

    • Syringomyelic arthropathy is a notable complication of syringomyelia with a potentially higher incidence than previously documented.
    • A multifactorial etiopathogenesis involving neurotrophic, neurotraumatic, and neurovascular mechanisms is suggested.
    • Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial for patients with syringomyelia and associated arthropathy.
