Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation

Insufficient sleep refers to not getting the recommended amount of sleep for optimal functioning, even if it's just slightly less than needed. Summary

Ninety-six hours of paradoxical sleep deprivation in rats reduced fat mass and altered inflammatory markers in adipose tissue depots. Corticosterone increased, while leptin and triglycerides decreased in serum.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of paradoxical sleep deprivation on pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines and adipokines in rat adipose tissue.
  • To assess changes in lipid profiles and serum levels of corticosterone, leptin, and adiponectin following sleep deprivation.

Main Methods:

  • Two groups of rats: control (C) and paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) for 96 hours.
  • Analysis of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in mesenteric (MEAT) and retroperitoneal (RPAT) adipose tissue.
  • Measurement of serum leptin, adiponectin, glucose, corticosterone, and lipid profiles.

Main Results:

  • Elevated IL-6 in RPAT, unchanged IL-6 in MEAT; decreased TNF-α in MEAT; unchanged IL-10 in both depots.
  • Serum glucose, triglycerides, VLDL, and leptin decreased after PSD.
  • Serum corticosterone increased, while adiponectin remained unchanged.

Conclusions:

  • Paradoxical sleep deprivation reduced fat mass and modulated cytokine content in adipose tissue depots.
  • The inflammatory response in adipose tissue was diminished, with depot-specific changes in IL-6 and TNF-α.
  • Increased serum corticosterone suggests a stress response to sleep deprivation.
