Summary

Posterior mitral valve leaflet prolapse is uncommon in routine left ventriculography, affecting 5.9% of patients. It was most common in atrial septal defects and myocardial lesions, suggesting left ventricle size plays a role.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Posterior mitral valve leaflet prolapse (PMVLp) is a cardiac condition.
  • Routine left ventriculography is a common diagnostic procedure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of PMVLp in patients undergoing routine left ventriculography.
  • To investigate potential associations between PMVLp and specific cardiac conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 1000 consecutive left ventriculograms (right anterior oblique projection).
  • Patient cohort: 511 women, 489 men; mean age 46.5 years.
  • Exclusion criteria: patients with coronary artery disease.

Main Results:

  • PMVLp was diagnosed in 59 patients (5.9%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Idiopathic mitral valve prolapse was diagnosed in 10 patients.
  • PMVLp was most frequent in atrial septal defect (16.6%), myocardial lesion (12.5%), and post-mitral commissurotomy (8.9%).
  • Conclusions:

    • PMVLp is not a frequent anomaly in routine left ventriculography.
    • The higher prevalence in atrial septal defect suggests a role for left ventricle size in PMVLp pathogenesis.
