Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Chondroid syringoma is a rare benign skin adnexal tumor with a low reported incidence (0.01-0.098%) among primary skin tumors.
  • This tumor typically presents as a slow-growing nodule.

Observation:

  • A 57-year-old woman presented with a 10-year history of a slowly growing philtrum lump.
  • Fine needle aspiration cytology revealed cohesive groups of round cells within a chondromyxoid ground substance.
  • Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of chondroid syringoma.

Findings:

  • Fine needle aspiration cytology is an effective diagnostic tool for chondroid syringoma.
  • Histopathology confirms the diagnosis, showing characteristic features of a benign appendageal tumor.

Implications:

  • Chondroid syringoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of slow-growing nodules on the head and neck.
  • Early diagnosis via fine needle aspiration cytology facilitates appropriate management.
  • Surgical excision is the primary treatment modality for chondroid syringoma.
