Summary

Single-access laparoscopy (SAL) offers cosmetic benefits and potential improvements in patient outcomes. This study evaluated 115 patients undergoing various procedures using new curved instruments, finding SAL cost-effective compared to traditional laparoscopy.

Background:

Laparoscopic surgery has seen significant investment in single-incision techniques.
Single-access laparoscopy (SAL) aims to improve cosmesis and potentially reduce postoperative pain and enhance patient satisfaction.

Purpose of the Study:

To report the initial experience with single-access laparoscopy (SAL) for various surgical procedures.
To evaluate the utility of new curved, reusable instruments for SAL.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 115 patients underwent SAL procedures including appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hernia repair, Nissen fundoplication, upper GI surgery, diagnostic laparoscopy, hepatic resection, and splenectomy.
New curved, reusable instruments were utilized to facilitate ergonomic positioning and internal triangulation.
The cost-effectiveness of SAL using reusable products was assessed.
