Summary

The US Navy dosimetric network (USN-DN) ensures accurate radiation dose measurements using LiF:Mg,Cu,P thermoluminescent dosemeters (TLDs). Calibration accuracy is within 3% network-wide, with reader calibration better than 4% for most sites.

Background:

The US Navy dosimetric network (USN-DN) utilizes LiF:Mg,Cu,P thermoluminescent dosemeters (TLDs) for personnel dosimetry.
The network comprises a central calibration facility (Naval Dosimetry Center - NDC) and 16 global satellite reading facilities.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the consistency and accuracy of TLD calibration and reader performance across the USN-DN.
To identify potential sources of error in the dosimetry process.

Main Methods:

An intercomparison exercise was conducted involving 150 dosemeters calibrated at the NDC and 27 locally calibrated remote readers.
Performance was assessed by comparing NDC calibrations with local calibrations at satellite facilities.

Main Results:

The accuracy of TLD calibration performed at the NDC was found to be less than 3% across the entire network.
Reader calibration accuracy was better than 4% for most readers.
Reader Channel 3 exhibited the worst performance, potentially due to calibration issues with the thinnest TLD chip.

Conclusions:

The NDC calibration process demonstrates high accuracy throughout the USN-DN.
Specific reader calibration procedures, particularly for thinner TLD chips, may require optimization to improve overall network performance.
