  • Self-reported craving was assessed using a visual analogue scale.

    • The excessive Internet game-playing group (EIGP) showed increased activity in the anterior cingulate and orbitofrontal cortex in response to game cues.
    • The general player group (GP) exhibited no significant change or a decrease in activity.
    • Changes in anterior cingulate activity were positively correlated with changes in craving for Internet video games across all subjects.

    Conclusions:

    • Extended Internet video-game play can lead to changes in frontal lobe activity, particularly in the orbitofrontal and anterior cingulate cortex.
    • These neural changes in excessive gamers resemble those seen in the early stages of addiction.
    • Increased prefrontal cortex activity and craving suggest a potential for developing problematic gaming behaviors.
