A Mouse Ear Model for Allergic Contact Dermatitis Evaluation

Background:

  • Topical products are frequently used in the genital region.
  • Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) can arise from product use or treatment of existing skin conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of ACD in the genital region.
  • To identify the most common allergens causing genital ACD.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of patch test data from 1,238 patients tested between January 1990 and December 2006.
  • Identification of 15 allergens causing reactions in over 1% of patients.
  • Statistical analysis using chi-square and Fisher exact tests, with significance adjusted to α = .002.

Main Results:

  • Of 37 patients with genital dermatitis, 41% had positive patch tests, but only 30% were diagnosed with relevant ACD.
  • The most frequent allergens were balsam of Peru (10.8%), fragrance mix I (8.1%), tolu balsam (8.1%), phenylmercuric acetate (8.1%), and neomycin (5.4%).
  • Females showed higher allergy rates (50%) than males (37%); 59.5% of patients had no positive reactions.

Conclusions:

  • Genital dermatitis is rare, with a minority of tested individuals showing positive results for ACD.
  • The primary allergens identified are commonly found in genital toiletries and cosmetics.
  • Fragrance ingredients are among the top allergens, emphasizing the importance of fragrance-free options for sensitive genital skin.
