[Vertical facial displasias: diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment]

The aim of this article is to analyse the diagnosis, planning and surgical treatment of different facial vertical maxillary and mandibular dysplasias, highlighting the importance of functional results after surgery and after proper planning. Patients with facial vertical dysplasias show an increased anterior facial height that prevents them from maintaining a relaxed and harmonious position of the perioral musculature. A basic fact to take into account when planning surgery is the incisal exposure which is different between men and women. Also it is critical to analyse other factors causing excess facial anterior height and not related to a vertical maxillary hyperplasia. We will discuss various types of genioplasties, a complementary technique to optimize esthetic and functional results.
