Background:

  • Role functioning (RF) is a key component of health-related quality of life.
  • Measuring RF is challenging due to broad definitions and variable participation.
  • A new item bank was developed to assess the impact of health on RF.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the dimensionality of a new item bank designed to measure role functioning.
  • To determine if the item bank is suitable for item response theory (IRT) analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Confirmatory factor analyses were performed on data from 2,500 participants.
  • A bi-factor model was evaluated to assess dimensionality.
  • Models explored conceptual factors and method effects from item wording.

Main Results:

  • A bi-factor model with one general and four conceptual factors (social, family, occupation, generic) demonstrated adequate fit.
  • Positively worded items were removed due to misfit.
  • High loadings on the general factor indicated sufficient unidimensionality for IRT analysis.

Conclusions:

  • The role functioning item bank exhibits sufficient unidimensionality.
  • This supports IRT-based calibration and the development of a computerized adaptive test for RF.
