Background:

  • Metastatic tumors to the paranasal sinuses are uncommon.
  • Metastasis specifically to the sphenoid sinus is exceedingly rare.

Observation:

  • A review of 26 cases of sphenoid sinus metastasis was conducted.
  • Patients ranged from 14 months to 79 years old.
  • Common primary sites included the prostate and lung.

Findings:

  • In 11 of 26 cases, sphenoid sinus metastasis was the initial presentation of malignancy.
  • Symptoms such as headache, facial pain, visual changes, and cranial neuropathies mimicked primary sinus tumors.
  • No cures were reported, but radiation therapy offered significant palliation.

Implications:

  • Sphenoid sinus symptoms may be the first indication of underlying malignancy.
  • Vigorous evaluation for primary and metastatic sinus tumors is essential for patients presenting with suggestive symptoms.
  • Early detection can lead to improved patient outcomes through palliative treatment.
