Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Oncology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Glomus tumours are rare soft-tissue neoplasms often found in the hand.
  • Clinical diagnosis is common due to characteristic symptoms.
  • Preoperative imaging aids in localization and differentiation from other soft-tissue masses.

Observation:

  • A 44-year-old woman presented with a painful mass and tingling in her fourth finger.
  • Ultrasonography identified a hypervascular mass near the fourth proximal phalanx.
  • Surgical exploration was performed due to suspected nerve compression by a vascular tumor.

Findings:

  • Histological examination confirmed a glomus tumour of the digital nerve.
  • The patient's symptoms resolved completely following surgical excision.

  • No tumor recurrence was observed during a 3-year follow-up period.
  • Implications:

    • Glomus tumours, though rare, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of hand masses with characteristic symptoms.
    • Early and accurate diagnosis, supported by imaging, is crucial for effective treatment.
    • Surgical excision is a highly effective treatment for digital nerve glomus tumours, leading to excellent outcomes.
