When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Early detection of hearing loss causes is crucial for effective treatment.

Observation:

Three patient cases highlight the dangers of bypassing specialist evaluation.
Conditions identified included acoustic neurinoma, psychogenic hearing loss, and perilymphatic fistula.

Findings:

Undiagnosed acoustic neurinoma can present as hearing loss.
Psychogenic factors can manifest as hearing impairment.
Sudden round window rupture leading to perilymphatic fistula is a rare cause of hearing loss.

Implications:

Emphasizes the necessity of ENT consultation before hearing aid prescription.
