Summary

Precompression time significantly enhances secure staple formation in linear stapling. Longer precompression times, especially on thinner tissues like the cardiac portion of porcine stomachs, improve staple alignment and safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of precompression time on secure staple formation using a linear stapler.
  • To evaluate staple shape, height, and completeness in relation to precompression and tissue characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • A 45-mm linear stapler with a blue cartridge was used on porcine stomach tissue.
  • Staple formation was analyzed after varying precompression times (0, 1, 5 minutes).
  • Staple shape, height, and staple line completeness were assessed.

Main Results:

  • A 5-minute precompression time significantly increased the optimal staple rate (52.7%) compared to 1-minute (28.7%) or 0-minute (17.1%) groups.
  • Optimal staple rates were highest in the cardiac portion (98.9%) but below 50% in thicker center and pylorus portions.
  • Staple line completeness showed high correlation between distal and proximal sides.

Conclusions:

  • Proper staple formation is correlated with intestinal wall thickness.
  • Sufficient precompression time is effective for achieving secure staple formation with linear stapling devices.
