Spontaneous internal jugular vein thrombosis: a case report

Internal jugular vein thrombosis (IJVT) is a rare vascular condition. Early diagnosis and treatment with anticoagulants can effectively manage spontaneous IJVT, preventing serious complications.

- A previously healthy 31-year-old woman presented with painless neck swelling.
- Ultrasonography revealed a hyperechogenic mass suggestive of a thrombus near the right internal jugular vein.
Findings:
- The patient received intravenous antibiotics and anticoagulation therapy (low-molecular-weight heparin followed by coumadin).
- Symptoms resolved within 5 days, with complete recovery at 6 months.
Implications:
- Primary care physicians should maintain a high suspicion for IJVT in patients with unexplained neck swelling.
- Prompt diagnosis and management of IJVT are crucial to prevent severe outcomes like sepsis and pulmonary embolism.
