Summary

Cancer pain significantly impacts patients of all ages, but younger adults experience more frequent pain flares and greater financial burdens. Age-based disparities in cancer pain management and its effects on quality of life warrant further investigation.

A Quantitative Sensory Testing Paradigm to Obtain Measures of Pain Processing in Patients Undergoing Breast Cancer Surgery

Background:

Cancer pain is prevalent but poorly understood across different age groups.
Breakthrough pain (BTP) significantly affects patients with well-controlled baseline pain.
The impact of cancer pain on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) across the lifespan needs further exploration.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate age-based differences in cancer-related pain characteristics and HRQOL.
To examine pain-related interference in younger versus older cancer patients over six months.
To identify disparities in cancer pain experiences across the lifespan.

Main Methods:

A longitudinal study involving 96 patients with stage III-IV cancer or multiple myeloma experiencing BTP.
Patients completed surveys at baseline, 3, and 6 months assessing pain, mood, coping, and HRQOL.
Analysis focused on age-related differences in pain severity, frequency, and impact on functioning.

Main Results:

No significant age differences in overall pain severity were observed.
Younger patients reported more frequent pain flares (P=0.05).
Older adults showed better baseline emotional functioning but worse physical functioning at 6 months; younger adults had worse cognitive functioning at 6 months (P=0.03). Pain interference was independent of age.

Conclusions:

Cancer pain imposes a substantial burden on both young and old adults, with younger individuals facing increased financial tolls.
Age, in addition to race and gender, represents a significant factor in healthcare disparities related to cancer pain.
Further research is crucial to address age-specific needs and disparities in cancer pain management throughout survivorship.
