Hydroboration-Oxidation of Alkenes03:08

Hydroboration-Oxidation of Alkenes

In addition to the oxymercuration–demercuration method, which converts the alkenes to alcohols with Markovnikov orientation, a complementary hydroboration-oxidation method yields the anti-Markovnikov product. The hydroboration reaction, discovered in 1959 by H.C. Brown, involves the addition of a B–H bond of borane to an alkene giving an organoborane intermediate. The oxidation of this intermediate with basic hydrogen peroxide forms an alcohol.
Nomenclature of Aromatic Compounds with Multiple Substituents01:11

Nomenclature of Aromatic Compounds with Multiple Substituents

When more than one substituent is present on the benzene ring, the IUPAC nomenclature depends on the number of substituents present.
For disubstituted benzene derivatives, with two groups attached to the benzene ring, three constitutional isomers are possible. For example, consider dimethyl benzene, often called xylene, where the second methyl group can be substituted at the second, third, or fourth carbon. The relative position of the substituents is represented by prefixes ortho, meta, or...
Regioselectivity and Stereochemistry of Acid-Catalyzed Hydration02:34

Regioselectivity and Stereochemistry of Acid-Catalyzed Hydration

The rate of acid-catalyzed hydration of alkenes depends on the alkene's structure, as the presence of alkyl substituents at the double bond can significantly influence the rate.
Stability of Substituted Cyclohexanes02:30

Stability of Substituted Cyclohexanes

This lesson discusses the stability of substituted cyclohexanes with a focus on energies of various conformers and the effect of 1,3-diaxial interactions.
The two chair conformations of cyclohexanes undergo rapid interconversion at room temperature. Both forms have identical energies and stabilities, each comprising equal amounts of the equilibrium mixture. Replacing a hydrogen atom with a functional group makes the two conformations energetically non-equivalent.
For example, in...
Molecules with Multiple Chiral Centers02:25

Molecules with Multiple Chiral Centers

Molecules that possess multiple chiral centers can afford a large number of stereoisomers. For instance, while some molecules like 2-butanol have one chiral center, defined as a tetrahedral carbon atom with four different substituents attached, several molecules like butane-2,3-diol have multiple chiral centers. A simple formula to predict the number of stereoisomers possible for a molecule with n chiral centers is 2n. However, there can be a lower number where some of the stereoisomers are...
Prochirality02:05

Prochirality

The concept of prochirality leads to the nomenclature of the individual faces of a molecule and plays a crucial role in the enantioselective reaction. It is a concept where two or more achiral molecules react to produce chiral products. A typical process is the reaction of an achiral ketone to generate a chiral alcohol. Here, the achiral reactant reacts with an achiral reducing agent, sodium borohydride, to generate an equimolar mixture of the chiral enantiomers of the product. For example, an...

Area of Science:

  • Crystallography
  • Materials Science
  • Solid-state Chemistry

Background:

  • Methyl 4-hydroxy-benzoate is an organic compound with known crystalline forms.
  • Polymorphism, the ability of a solid material to exist in more than one crystal structure, is common in organic compounds and can affect material properties.
  • Previous research has documented a monoclinic polymorph of methyl 4-hydroxy-benzoate.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report and characterize a second monoclinic polymorph of methyl 4-hydroxy-benzoate.
  • To compare the unit-cell dimensions and structural features with the previously known monoclinic form.
  • To elucidate the intermolecular interactions stabilizing the crystal structure.

Main Methods:

  • Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the unit-cell dimensions and atomic coordinates.
  • Analysis of the crystal structure to identify hydrogen bonding and other non-covalent interactions.
  • Comparison of crystallographic data with existing literature.

Main Results:

  • A new monoclinic polymorph of methyl 4-hydroxy-benzoate (C(8)H(8)O(3)) was successfully synthesized and characterized.
  • The unit-cell dimensions of this new polymorph are distinct from the previously reported monoclinic form.
  • The asymmetric unit contains three crystallographically independent molecules, similar to the known form.
  • The crystal structure is stabilized by a network of intermolecular O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, along with C-H⋯π interactions.

Conclusions:

  • The discovery of a second monoclinic polymorph expands the understanding of the solid-state behavior of methyl 4-hydroxy-benzoate.
  • The distinct unit-cell dimensions highlight the subtle differences in molecular packing between polymorphs.
  • The identified intermolecular interactions provide insights into the factors governing crystal structure formation and stability.
