Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the performance of the Medtronic 0800 and Quadrox-iD Pediatric oxygenators in a conventional roller pump circuit.
  • To evaluate an alternative circuit using the Quadrox-iD Pediatric oxygenator with a Maquet Rotaflow centrifugal pump system.

Main Methods:

  • Three ECLS circuits were tested: two conventional roller pump circuits (Medtronic 0800 vs. Quadrox-iD) and one alternative centrifugal pump circuit (Quadrox-iD with Maquet Rotaflow).
  • Circuits were primed with blood (40% hematocrit) and Lactated Ringer's solution.
  • Testing was conducted at various flow rates (250-750 ml/min) and mean arterial line pressures (60-100 mmHg) at 37°C.

Main Results:

  • The Quadrox-iD Pediatric oxygenator demonstrated lower pressure drops and greater retention of total hemodynamic energy (THE) compared to the Medtronic 0800.

  • The alternative circuit exhibited advantages such as rapid setup, portability, reduced priming volumes, and non-gravity-dependent venous drainage.

  • The Quadrox-iD Pediatric oxygenator is recommended for use with the Maquet Rotaflow centrifugal pump system in pediatric ECLS.
  • This alternative circuit configuration offers superior hemodynamic performance and practical benefits for clinical application.
