A daily 100g Antep pistachio diet significantly improved erectile function scores and penile blood flow in men with erectile dysfunction (ED). This dietary intervention also positively impacted cholesterol levels, enhancing overall cardiovascular health.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Nutritional Science
- Cardiovascular Health
Background:
- Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent condition affecting male sexual health.
- Dietary interventions are increasingly explored for managing ED and associated metabolic factors.
- Pistachios, particularly Antep pistachios, are rich in nutrients beneficial for vascular health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of a daily Antep pistachio diet on erectile function in men with ED.
- To assess changes in penile hemodynamics using penile color Doppler ultrasound (PCDU).
- To investigate the effects of pistachios on serum lipid profiles in patients with ED.
Main Methods:
- A prospective study involving 17 married male patients diagnosed with ED.
- Participants consumed 100g of Antep pistachios daily for 3 weeks.
- Evaluations included the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire, PCDU, and serum lipid levels (TC, LDL, HDL, triglycerides) before and after the intervention.
Main Results:
- Mean IIEF scores significantly increased from 36 ± 7.5 to 54.2 ± 4.9 (P=0.001), with improvements across all five domains.
- Penile peak systolic velocity (PSV) on PCDU increased from 35.5 ± 15.2 cm/s to 43.3 ± 12.4 cm/s (P=0.018).
- Significant improvements in lipid profiles were observed: decreased total cholesterol (TC) and LDL, and increased HDL (P<0.01).
Conclusions:
- A 3-week dietary regimen of 100g Antep pistachios daily effectively improved erectile function and penile hemodynamics in men with ED.
- The pistachio diet demonstrated beneficial effects on serum lipid profiles, contributing to improved cardiovascular health markers.
- Antep pistachios represent a safe and effective dietary supplement for managing erectile dysfunction and associated metabolic disturbances.
