Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...
Psychodynamic Therapy01:29

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapies emphasize the exploration of unconscious processes and early childhood experiences as fundamental contributors to psychological difficulties. These therapies, deeply rooted in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, aim to uncover and resolve unconscious conflicts, granting individuals insights that promote emotional and behavioral healing. Contemporary psychodynamic approaches have evolved, integrating a broader range of influences and methodologies while still valuing the...

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.
Foundations of Community Mental Health Programs

Psychosis: Goals of Pharmacotherapy

Antipsychotic drugs are a crucial treatment method for acute and chronic psychoses, bipolar illness, and behavioral disorders. The selection of these drugs depends on several factors, including the state of the disease, clinical judgment, possible drug interactions, and the patient's sensitivity to adverse effects. In immediate scenarios, such as delirium and dementia, short-term treatment with low doses of high-potency typical or atypical agents can effectively manage symptom exacerbation. For...
Theoretical Approaches to Psychological Disorder01:29

Theoretical Approaches to Psychological Disorder

The development of psychological disorders, which are characterized by deviant, maladaptive, and personally distressing behaviors, has been explored through several theoretical approaches.
Biological approach
The biological approach posits that internal, organic factors are the primary causes of such disorders. This perspective emphasizes brain structure and function, genetic predispositions, and neurotransmitter imbalances. For example, schizophrenia has been associated with both genetic...
Psychosurgery01:30

Psychosurgery

Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.
Historical Development of Psychosurgery
In the 1930s, Portuguese neurologist Antonio Egas Moniz introduced a surgical procedure designed...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Public Health
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Mental health conditions represent a significant global disease burden.
  • Non-psychiatrist medical professionals manage a substantial number of mental health cases.
  • Assessing the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of these practitioners is crucial for improving care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the understanding, attitudes, and treatment approaches of non-psychiatrist medical practitioners concerning mental health problems.
  • To identify gaps in training and identify areas for professional development.

Main Methods:

  • A semi-structured performa was used to interview 100 Allopathic, 25 Homeopathic, and 25 Ayurvedic medical practitioners.
  • Data collected focused on knowledge, attitudes, and current treatment practices for mental health issues.

Main Results:

  • High awareness (95%) among practitioners regarding the causes, prevalence, and available treatments for mental health problems.
  • While counseling and medication are common treatment modalities, 69.9% reported no formal training in their administration.
  • A significant majority expressed a need for enhanced training.

Conclusions:

  • Nearly all practitioners (98.5%) involved in primary mental healthcare recognize the need for formal training.
  • Improved training and orientation are essential to enhance the quality of mental healthcare services delivered at the primary level.
