Background:

  • Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a frequent condition in women of reproductive age.
  • BV prevalence is notable in obstetric populations, contributing to preterm delivery risks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between bacterial vaginosis and preterm delivery.
  • To determine if BV is a risk factor for premature birth.

Main Methods:

  • A study included 100 pregnant women (15-35 years) between 28-36 weeks gestation with suspected BV.
  • Participants were categorized into BV-positive (37) and BV-negative (63) groups using Amsel clinical criteria.
  • Demographic and socioeconomic factors showed no significant differences between groups.

Main Results:

  • A significantly higher percentage of BV-positive women experienced preterm delivery (73%) compared to BV-negative women (25.4%).
  • Mean gestational age at delivery was significantly lower in the BV-positive group (35.24 ± 2.33 weeks) versus the BV-negative group (37.49 ± 2.53 weeks).

Conclusions:

  • Abnormal bacterial colonization, characteristic of bacterial vaginosis, is strongly associated with preterm delivery.
  • BV is a significant risk factor for premature birth in pregnant women.
