  • To determine the prevalence of respiratory symptoms among Dutch firefighters.
  • To identify risk factors associated with these symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • 1,330 firefighters from three Dutch provinces participated.
  • A Dutch web-based European Community Respiratory Health Survey questionnaire was used.

Main Results:

  • Respiratory symptoms correlated with the number of fires fought (OR 1.2-1.4 per 25 fires).
  • Inhalation incidents showed a strong association with symptoms (OR 1.7-3.0).
  • Associations remained significant after adjusting for smoking, sex, atopy, and age.

Conclusions:

  • Firefighters have elevated health risks from fire smoke exposure.
  • Increased use of self-contained breathing apparatus is recommended to mitigate these risks.
