Summary

Translumbar dialysis catheter insertion is a safe and effective method for patients unable to use standard dialysis access. This technique provided reliable long-term hemodialysis access in challenging cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the three-year experience with translumbar insertion of dialysis catheters.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of this alternative access method.

Main Methods:

  • Fluoroscopically guided translumbar cannulation of the inferior vena cava (IVC) was performed in five adult patients.
  • A standard Seldinger technique was employed for catheter placement.
  • Pre-tunneled silastic catheters were utilized for hemodialysis.

Main Results:

  • Catheters were functional for 3 to 10 months.
  • No permanent catheter dysfunction occurred.
  • Temporary thrombosis and catheter contamination were successfully managed without removal.

Conclusions:

  • Translumbar dialysis catheter insertion is a safe and effective alternative for hemodialysis access.
  • This method is particularly valuable when standard approaches are impossible.
