Depressive Disorders: Etiology01:27

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...
Depression: Overview01:18

Depression: Overview

Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...
Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Summary

Suicidal patients often experience vivid suicide imagery during depressive episodes. This imagery may differ in meaning and distress levels, suggesting potential therapeutic targets for depression and suicide prevention.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Suicide-related imagery is a known phenomenon in individuals with a history of suicidal ideation or behavior.
  • Previous research indicates vivid imagery during depressive episodes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To replicate findings on suicide-related imagery in a community sample of adults with a history of depression.
  • To explore the nature and meaning of suicide imagery in relation to suicidal ideation and behavior.

Main Methods:

  • A community sample of 27 adults with a history of depression was interviewed.
  • Participants were assessed for suicidal ideation, behavior, and suicide-related imagery.

Main Results:

  • The majority of participants with prior suicidal ideation/behavior reported vivid suicide imagery during depressive episodes.
  • Some participants without reported suicidal ideation also described death/suicide imagery, sometimes with protective meanings.
  • Higher suicidality severity correlated with lower distress and higher comfort related to imagery.

Conclusions:

  • Suicide-related imagery is a significant aspect of depression and despair.
  • The meaning attributed to imagery may differ between those with and without a history of suicidal acts.
  • Targeting suicide imagery directly could be a valuable therapeutic approach for suicidal patients.
