Additional Subnuclear Structures02:10

Additional Subnuclear Structures

The eukaryotic nucleus is a double membrane-bound organelle that contains nearly all of the cell’s genetic material in the form of chromosomes. It is rightly called the “brain” of the cell as it shoulders the responsibility of responding to various physiological processes, stress, altered metabolic conditions, and other cellular signals.
The nucleus contains many membrane-less subnuclear organelles or nuclear bodies, such as nucleoli, Cajal bodies, speckles, paraspeckles, etc. These nuclear...
The Nucleus01:25

The Nucleus

The nucleus is a membrane-bound organelle that acts as a control center in a eukaryotic cell. It contains chromosomal DNA, which controls gene expression and precisely regulates the production of proteins within the cell. In contrast, the DNA inside the mitochondria and chloroplast only carries out functions that are specific to those organelles.

Non-nuclear Inheritance01:29

Non-nuclear Inheritance

Most DNA resides in the nucleus of a cell. However, some organelles in the cell cytoplasm—such as chloroplasts and mitochondria—also have their own DNA. These organelles replicate their DNA independently of the nuclear DNA of the cell in which they reside. Non-nuclear inheritance describes the inheritance of genes from structures other than the nucleus.

Summary

Nascent RNAs act as scaffolds to form nuclear bodies within eukaryotic cells. These findings reveal how these crucial cellular compartments are assembled and maintained.

Area of Science:

  • Cell Biology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Eukaryotic cell nuclei contain numerous microscopic compartments called nuclear bodies.
  • The formation and maintenance mechanisms of nuclear bodies have remained largely unknown.

Discussion:

  • Recent live-cell imaging studies offer new insights into nuclear body assembly.
  • Nascent RNAs appear to function as transient scaffolds, recruiting specific proteins.

Key Insights:

  • Nascent RNA molecules play a critical role in the organization of nuclear bodies.
  • This mechanism provides a dynamic framework for the recruitment of nuclear body proteins.

Outlook:

  • Further research can explore the precise interactions between nascent RNAs and proteins.
