Background:

  • Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) and atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) are inflammatory eye conditions.
  • Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) class II molecules play a role in immune responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression patterns of HLA class II molecules (HLA DR, DP, and DQ) in conjunctival biopsies from OCP and AKC patients.
  • To compare HLA class II expression in OCP and AKC patients with normal individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Conjunctival biopsy specimens from OCP, AKC patients, and normal controls were analyzed.
  • Immunohistochemical staining was performed using monoclonal antibodies specific for HLA DR, DP, and DQ.
  • Expression levels and localization of HLA class II molecules in epithelial and subepithelial layers were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Significantly higher expression of HLA DR, DP, and DQ was observed in the conjunctival epithelium and substantia propria of OCP and AKC patients compared to normal controls.
  • Increased HLA class II positive inflammatory cells were noted in the subepithelial layer and around vessels in OCP and AKC specimens.
  • Vessel endothelial cells showed varying degrees of HLA class II staining across all groups.

Conclusions:

  • Conjunctival tissues in OCP and AKC exhibit aberrant expression of HLA class II molecules.
  • These findings suggest a role for HLA class II-mediated immune responses in the pathogenesis of OCP and AKC.
  • Further research may elucidate specific immune pathways involved in these ocular conditions.
