[Piezoelectric effect on bone and its origin]

The epidemiological data all over the world show that the reduction of the residual ridge (RRG) of the maxilla and the mandible is one of the major problems in edentulous patients. As it appears after teeth extraction in various degrees and in patients with and without the mobile teeth substitutes, regardless their health condition it can be concluded that the main factor of RRG is the absence of the normal function of the existing teeth. The knowledge about the transformation of the mechanical energy into the electric one by some tissue--especially of the bone--wade, in fact, a new basis for a better understanding of the RRG process. Discovery of electro-mechanical occurrences in the bone, i.e. of piezzoelectricity and of its biological influence on the bone tissue, proved that the electromagnetic disturbance in bone, related to the absence of the function, we considered as a dominant pathophysiological process in RRG.
