Background:
Intra- and inter-species transmission of Human herpesvirus type 1 were noticed. In the present study, the herpesviral infection of a 1-year-old Azara's Night Monkey (Aotus azarae) was investigated.
Methods:
Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy investigations were done.
Results:
A fatal systemic herpesviral infection was demonstrated.
Conclusion:
The results reveal the susceptibility of Azara's Night Monkey to the Human herpesvirus type 1. Moreover, humans shedding herpes viral particles during the reactivation phase of the infection directly infect the Azara's Night Monkeys.
