Summary

Experimental gingivitis induced endotoxemia and increased neutrophil activity in healthy adults. Systemic inflammatory markers like cytokines and C-reactive protein (CRP) did not significantly change, suggesting mild gingivitis limits systemic inflammation.

Background:

  • Experimental gingivitis is a model to study oral inflammation.
  • Endotoxemia and systemic inflammatory responses are potential consequences of gingivitis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess endotoxemia and changes in serum inflammatory biomarkers during experimental gingivitis.
  • To investigate the relationship between gingivitis, endotoxemia, and systemic inflammation.

Main Methods:

  • 50 healthy adults participated in a 3-week experimental gingivitis model.
  • Serum endotoxin and inflammatory biomarkers (neutrophil oxidative activity, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, CRP, fibrinogen) were measured at baseline, 3 weeks, and 2 weeks post-recovery.
  • Repeated measures analysis of variance was used for statistical comparison.

Main Results:

  • Endotoxemia was detected in 56% of samples at 3 weeks of gingivitis, returning to baseline levels after recovery.
  • Neutrophil oxidative activity significantly increased with gingivitis (p<0.05).
  • Serum cytokines, CRP, and fibrinogen levels remained unchanged throughout the study.

Conclusions:

  • Experimental gingivitis is linked to endotoxemia and heightened neutrophil activity.
  • No significant changes in systemic cytokines or acute-phase proteins were observed.
  • The mild and short duration of induced gingivitis may explain the limited systemic inflammatory response.
