Conditioned taste aversion, also known as sauce béarnaise syndrome, is a phenomenon in which an individual develops an aversion to a certain food taste following a negative experience, typically illness. Summary

This study investigated if pairing saccharin with cyclophosphamide in mice could create conditioned taste aversion and immunodepression. Results showed that impaired immunity did not lead to taste aversion, and saccharin did not suppress antibody responses.

Background:

  • Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) is a learned aversion to a flavor associated with illness.
  • Conditioned immunosuppression (CIS) is a learned reduction in immune response linked to a neutral stimulus paired with an immunosuppressant drug.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential for generating CTA and CIS by pairing saccharin with cyclophosphamide in mice.
  • To determine if impaired immune response can elicit a learned taste aversion.

Main Methods:

  • Male CD1 mice were divided into four groups: paired (saccharin + cyclophosphamide), unpaired (non-contingent saccharin and cyclophosphamide), cy60 (saccharin + higher dose cyclophosphamide), and placebo (saccharin only).
  • Mice were immunized with keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) before treatment.
  • Taste aversion and antibody responses to KLH and ovalbumin were measured.

Main Results:

  • All treated groups (paired, unpaired, cy60) showed a similar decrease in antibody response to KLH.
  • Mice in the paired group did not develop a taste aversion to saccharin, unlike the cy60 group.
  • Repeated saccharin exposure did not affect antibody response to ovalbumin in the paired group.

Conclusions:

  • Impaired immunity, induced by cyclophosphamide, did not elicit conditioned taste aversion to saccharin.
  • The conditioned stimulus (saccharin) did not impair the antibody response in this experimental setup.
