Abstract:
This paper is a comprehensive review of topical corticosteroid therapy with special emphasis on the classification and use in psoriasis of this class of drugs. Aspects of percutaneous absorption and mode of action are discussed. Variables on which to base the choice of appropriate steroid preparations and vehicles are outlined with regard to skin regions and surface conditions. Concepts of chemical, biological and clinical equivalence are reviewed, especially in relation to generic products. Common steroid side effects are discussed and guidelines for prevention are listed, with emphasis on the newer superpotent corticoids.
