Summary

Long-term ingestion of canthaxanthin supplements, used for tanning, resulted in golden retinal deposits that fully resolved over 20 years. Patients experienced no vision impairment or adverse effects from these deposits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term ocular outcomes in patients with canthaxanthin retinopathy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective identification of 13 patients with canthaxanthin consumption and retinal deposits.
  • Long-term follow-up (16-24 years) including visual acuity, Amsler grid, slit lamp, perimetry, electrophysiology, OCT, and fluorescein angiography.

Main Results:

  • Golden retinal particles resolved completely over approximately 20 years.
  • All patients remained asymptomatic with no detectable functional vision defects.
